Work Package 6: Ecosystem service values from Irish BC habitats

Objectives:

  • Using a natural capital accounting approach, define and quantify the socio-economic value of the ecosystem services and benefits provided by BCEs

  • Define and quantify the value of BC systems for biodiversity, and where relevant, coastal protection

Tasks:

  • Assess the range of ecosystem services delivered to societies by the identified BCEs

  • Survey of willingness to pay for BCEs conservation/restoration

  • Modelling of the public preferences for ecosystem services and the welfare impacts of changes in the provision of BC ecosystem services

  • Recreation on Saltmarshes

  • Financing BC

Deliverables:

  • Review of previous BC valuation studies with assessment of ecosystem services provided by Irish BCEs

  • Survey instrument and discrete choice experiment design for collection of public opinion data and WTP information

  • Report /paper on model results and welfare impacts from a number of future scenarios involving BCEs

  • Paper on the travel cost modelling approach

  • Guideline document for local communities and management that outlines practical solutions for financing BCE projects in Ireland

  • PhD on the Economics of BCEs in Ireland
